Microchips vs. QR tags
They solve different halves of the same problem. Strong programs use both.

Microchips and smart tags are often framed as competitors. They are complements — each covers the other's blind spot.
What a microchip does
A microchip is permanent identification: implanted once, it survives lost collars, theft and time. Reading it requires a scanner — at a clinic, a shelter or in an officer's vehicle — and the number is only as useful as the registry entry behind it. A chip whose owner record is current is a reunion; a chip pointing to a stale phone number is a dead end.
What a QR tag does
A tag is public identification: anyone who finds the animal can act immediately, with a phone, without equipment. Scanning opens the pet's public profile and provides the available option to contact the owner — no personal information printed on the collar.
Why programs use both
- The tag produces fast, neighbour-powered reunions without a shelter visit
- The chip guarantees identification when the collar is gone
- Both resolve to the same connected owner record, so one address update keeps both current
The operational rule: chip for permanence, tag for speed, one connected record to keep both current.
